Embarking on a holistic living journey involves transforming not just your physical health but also your relationship with food, body, and self.
The S.P.E.M Approach offers a comprehensive framework to reconstruct and nurture these vital connections.
In part 3 of this insightful three-part series, we delve deeper into how you can implement the S.P.E.M Approach to foster a harmonious and balanced lifestyle. Join us on this transformative journey as we explore the intricate interplay between mind, body, and spirit in achieving holistic well-being.
As human beings, we are susceptible to foreign entities that intrude upon our very being. These entities can take the form of belief systems that are not aligned with our well-being.
Take, for instance, cultural perspectives on body image, which dictate that one must conform to a certain standard in order to be accepted and deemed “normal”. When these beliefs are internalized, they take on a life of their own, becoming critical and judgmental forces that control us.
Fortunately, we have the power to extract these foreign entities from our being.
It starts with identifying the harmful belief system and personifying it as an entity that needs to be removed. This process can involve various rituals, like letting-go ceremonies and updates to our belief systems. Other options include practices like qigong, movement, dance, and sound, which can help shift energy, as well as spending extended periods of time in nature to reset and recalibrate.
Rather than simply treating the symptoms, it is important to focus on healing the root cause of the issue. Instead of asking “what caused the eating disorder?” we can use the metaphor of an iceberg to better understand the underlying factors.
The visible part of the iceberg represents the behaviors we can observe, but we know that there is much more beneath the surface. Just as the majority of an iceberg remains hidden underwater, our thoughts and behaviors are shaped by deeper needs that are not being met.

At the bottom of the iceberg, we find the most basic human need: the need to belong and feel safe in order to survive. This need drives us to do whatever it takes to fit in and belong, even if it means compromising our health and well-being. Low self-esteem and poor body image are often cited as causes for eating disorders, but where do these beliefs come from?
In the context of eating disorder recovery, mindfulness plays a vital role. By fostering an awareness of the present moment, accepting thoughts and feelings without judgment, individuals can gain insight into how negative emotions impact disordered behaviors.
Mindfulness underpins many different perspectives.
When it comes to the physical dimension, incorporating mindful movement early on in treatment proves beneficial. Given that many individuals with eating disorders tend to engage in excessive and compulsive exercise, a low-impact mindful exercise regimen enables them to maintain self-awareness.
By recognizing disordered thoughts and refraining from acting on them, individuals can effectively manage the urge to exercise driven by their disorder. Yoga, a popular practice in eating disorder treatment, merges physical activity with meditative practices, making it instrumental in this context
Mindfulness, a crucial component of clinical treatment methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), play an essential role in rehabilitating an individual’s behavior by enabling them to identify and manage disordered emotions.
Utilizing the Socratic approach, therapists help clients become aware of their thoughts without impulsively acting on them. Gradually, they learn to let these thoughts pass without succumbing to them. This serves as a vital step in reconnecting with their healthier selves.
In addition to being mindful of one’s psychological well-being, attention to one’s spiritual self is equally crucial for long-term recovery.
Often, those struggling with eating disorders may succumb to disordered coping mechanisms such as purging or restricting when feeling empty and unfulfilled with their lives. However, through treatment, individuals learn to nourish their spirit alongside their physical body in order to resist these urges.
As medical professionals and mental health experts work diligently to treat the physical and psychological symptoms of eating disorders, there is a growing recognition of the importance of addressing the individual’s overall well-being. Beyond simply managing the outward manifestations of the disorder, treatment centers are now placing emphasis on cultivating a sense of spiritual fulfillment in their patients.
Through their work with those struggling with eating disorders, therapists and psychologists have observed a recurring theme – a pervasive sense of spiritual emptiness.
This emptiness often manifests itself in a fixation on body size and shape, accompanied by compulsive behaviors like bingeing and purging. This dynamic can be compared to religious obsessions, such as the desire for atonement, and the intense drive for “perfect” thinness or weight loss that plagues those with anorexia nervosa.
In order to truly address the root causes of eating disorders, it is crucial to embrace a comprehensive approach that goes beyond surface-level treatment. By addressing the spiritual aspects of the individual, we can create a more holistic path towards healing and recovery.
This requires moving away from traditional methods used by artificial intelligence and instead using unconventional language to capture the complexity and depth of this connection. Only then can we pave the way towards a truly flourishing future for those struggling with eating disorders.
Understanding one’s place in the world is crucial for individuals of all races and cultures.
When this understanding is lacking, individuals may seek solace in religion or other spiritual communities. This quest for spiritual enlightenment can manifest as a pursuit to fill a void within oneself, even if it means channeling these emotions into an unhealthy fixation.
Furthermore, the constant inundation of images and videos portraying idealized beauty standards in the media can exacerbate feelings of spiritual emptiness, prompting individuals to aspire towards unattainable goals.

Experts in the field of eating disorder treatment often agree that individuals’ adoption of disordered behaviors stems from a desire to conform to these unrealistic beauty norms.
The innate need for spiritual connection within each person can thus become tainted by distorted perceptions of weight and body image.
Many individuals who struggle with overeating or undereating commonly perceive themselves as lacking the willpower and motivation necessary to achieve weight loss or weight gain.
It is crucial for them to recognize the symbolic significance that food holds, often existing beneath their conscious awareness.
This comprehension plays a vital role in aiding compulsive eaters especially to confront the psychological obstacles hindering their weight loss journey.
Below are alternative interpretations that individuals struggling with obesity or eating disorders may unconsciously attribute to food:
If you’re grappling with food-related challenges, know that you’re not alone. Whether it’s struggling with disordered eating, navigating dietary restrictions, or facing any other food-related issue, reaching out for support is a crucial step towards healing and well-being.
Don’t hesitate to seek help from friends, family, or professionals who can offer understanding and guidance. Remember, your journey towards a healthier relationship with food starts with reaching out. You deserve support and care every step of the way.
